It’s different because it doesn’t necessarily have a happy ending. The first part of the story is given to setting the scene, and is followed by just a series of small challenges and rising action before a climactic conclusion. The mountain structure is a way of mapping the tension and drama in a story. It’s similar to the monomyth because it helps us to plot when certain events occur in a story.

Visual storytelling is one of the most important aspects of great storytelling in videos, films, ads, and many social media posts. It allows artists to connect with their fans and create content based on good storytelling. In essence, each element – the characters, the plot, the conflict, the theme, and the setting – all come together to form a well-crafted story. They each play a unique role and contribute to the overall storytelling experience.
Get ready to turn your next presentation into an unforgettable journey, where every slide is a stepping stone towards a lasting impact. Techniques like foreshadowing and in medias res are not decorative. They determine how tension is distributed across the story. If the technique doesn’t serve the story, it becomes visible. From that point, you can begin writing your screenplay with a clearer idea of how your story should be structured. If it feels unfair — if the misdirection withholds information the audience needed — it breaks trust.
It might seem strange to think about ‘shaping’ a story when we tell stories off the cuff all the time. It may never have occurred to you that you can get intentional about how your story will go, before you tell it in public. You don’t have to plan and practise every story in advance, of course. And it was terrifying, yes, but it was also exhilarating. After I sat down, my heart was still pounding, and I got to listen to nine other people tell true stories about their lives. Stories created a kind of alchemy in the room, giving us all a way to know each other, whether we were telling or listening.
Pay attention to recurring patterns in your characters’ experiences and the choices they make. Just be careful not to provide too many everyday details that your story loses sight of its plot. For those of you more comfortable sharing data than personal experiences, storytelling might feel challenging, especially if you feel nervous on stage.
For creatives, telling stories isn’t just about entertainment. They’re a medium to express ideas, share visions, and create lasting impressions. To make your story more dynamic you can start halfway (e.g. in the middle of the action), flashback to the past, or flash forward to the future. Don’t hesitate to speed things up or slow things down to make your story more vivid. VillainIf your protagonist is the hero of the story, you can also create his Antagonist.
This approach engages your audience directly, making them a part of the story. Through polls, questions, and interactive storytelling presentations, you turn passive listeners into active participants, creating a memorable and dynamic presentation experience. Narrative techniques are the methods used to structure and present a story. Most stories use several of these techniques simultaneously, each controlling a different aspect of how the story reaches the audience. Eternal Sunshine uses stream of consciousness structure to represent the deterioration of memory in real time. The audience experiences the loss as it happens — not as a story about loss told after the fact.
Romeo & Juliet, for example, revolves around the themes of love, fate, and family; A Tale of Two Cities has themes of war, revolution, justice, and power & corruption. At its most basic, setting is where your story takes place, but setting can serve many more functions than just this. The relationship that your characters have to their setting influences the story’s pace, plot, conflict, and even its themes. The magic of storytelling is found in the power of stories themselves. Many writers, however, confuse “story” with “situation,” having not been taught the difference between these two concepts.
Multiple POV (alternating between characters) shows different sides of your story and creates dramatic irony when readers know things characters don’t. Use showing for important moments that deserve attention and emotional weight. Use telling for transitions or background information that doesn’t need emphasis. Finding this balance keeps your story moving while highlighting key scenes. It creates atmosphere and context for everything that happens.
Emotional clarity guides your audience’s journey and ensures they walk away with the message you intended. The more uncomfortable situations you navigate, the more storytelling material you gain. Plus, learning how to stay composed and grounded during emotional or high-stakes stories will make you a more compelling speaker and narrator.
It’s about turning dry facts into compelling stories, making complex information digestible and memorable. If narrative elements define what the story is about, narrative techniques define how the audience experiences it. Your characters need depth to feel authentic and relatable.
One way to do this is to tell the audience why you’ve just told them the story you’ve told them. This should come in just when the audience is getting comfortable with the status quo. It’s the curveball that sends the story into a new trajectory. For Cain, it’s the coolest girl in the camp ruining Cain’s idea of a reader-friendly summercamp. It’s the moment the audience perks up, recognizing a shift from the norm, a challenge to overcome.

Don’t feel the need to write in a formal, academic style unless you’re an academic, in which case, that’s your brand. Active, descriptive language draws in your audience and persuades them with a good narrative. Good writing doesn’t mean you need to pack every sentence with every impressive vocabulary word you know.
But some kinds of storytelling require people to participate in the story. Compelling narratives, your own stories or otherwise, include conflict, tension, challenges, obstacles, and even heartbreak. These elements add intrigue, create anticipation in your audience (they’ll ask, “How will they get out of this one?.”), and raise the emotional stakes of your tale. If you’re a fiction writer, developing “realistic” characters takes work. Because stories appeal to human emotions, well-crafted narratives can profoundly impact listeners and readers. Stories give information context, making facts easier to understand and retain.
This makes your characters feel real and relatable to your audience, and they can see themselves reflected in your characters’ struggles and triumphs.
